Mental Health Awareness Day 2024

As we mark World Mental Health Day in 2024 it’s never been more important. The ongoing challenges students face, ranging from academic pressure, financial stress and social concerns have increased the demand on university mental health services. To respond universities have been evolving their strategies, investing in wellbeing initiatives and introducing innovative ways to meet students' growing needs. We’re therefore shining a spotlight on universities that are leading the way.

#1 Innovative Support from Trinity College Dublin

Trinity College Dublin has enhanced its student wellbeing services by expanding the "stepped-care" model. This approach provides students with different levels of mental health support depending on their needs, from early interventions like workshops and peer mentoring to more specialised therapeutic services.

#2 A systemic approach from Glasgow Caledonian University

Glasgow Caledonian University is focusing on the prevention of mental health issues by embedding wellbeing into the student experience. Their approach integrates mental health education into the academic curriculum and campus culture. They are also increasing staffing and resources to meet the growing demand for support, aiming to create a sustainable, long-term system that offers ongoing support for students throughout their university journey.

#3 Peer led programmes by Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University has expanded its mental health resources in response to the challenges faced by its diverse student population. A key initiative is the use of peer-led support programmes like Active Minds, which work to destigmatise mental health discussions on campus. This effort is complemented by a range of flexible counselling services, including virtual and hybrid options, making it easier for students to access care from anywhere.

#4 Promoting mental health at University of California, Irvine

The University of California, Irvine is promoting mental health as part of a broader wellbeing strategy, rather than just responding to crises. This proactive approach includes wellness workshops, health promotion campaigns and easily accessible mental health services. The university aims to change the narrative around mental health, encouraging students to view it as an essential aspect of overall wellbeing, much like physical health.

#5 Institution wide approach from the University of Bristol

The University of Bristol is leading the way with an institution-wide strategy that supports both student and staff wellbeing. Mental health initiatives are being integrated into all areas of campus life, ensuring that wellbeing resources are accessible and proactive. The university is also expanding its services to offer comprehensive mental health support, aiming to create a positive environment for everyone on campus.
