How are UK universities celebrating Black History Month in 2024?

This year, the theme "Reclaiming Narratives" challenges us to rethink how black history and culture are portrayed and to highlight stories that have often been overlooked or misrepresented. Across the UK, universities are celebrating with events, campaigns and initiatives.

Here’s a spotlight on some inspiring initiatives that embody this year’s theme.

#1 Events, talks, presentations and screenings at the University of Nottingham

The university is offering a range of initiatives throughout October, including exhibitions, panel discussions, workshops, themed reading lists and film screenings. These activities aim to create a significant shift in recognising and redefining the narratives surrounding black history and culture.

#2 Black Students' Network- Paint and Sip

The Black Students' Network at the University of Bristol is holding an event focused on creativity and community. It’s a relaxed evening where attendees can paint, sip, and connect with fellow Black students. The event is a chance for those interested in community-building and change-making to meet others with similar interests, while also learning more about the Network’s initiatives.

#3 Loughbrough University's webinar explores why 1950s-60s Britain didn't recognise its own racism

An industry networking session the university is hosting explores why post-war Britain wasn't widely considered racist in the 1950s and 60s, examining research, media and debates of the time. The webinar explains how views shifted in the late 1960s due to Enoch Powell’s influence, activism and studies revealing racial discrimination based solely on skin colour.

#4 A showcase of films focusing on black culture and history

Grab your popcorn as throughout October, the University of Birmingham will be hosting several film screenings. Films like Blackkklansman, Hidden Figures and Blue Story will be showcased, offering powerful storytelling that reflects key aspects of black history and culture.

#5 The awarding gap for black students

The University of Portsmouth has taken steps to address the awarding gap for black students, reducing it from 27% to 17%. Alongside this, events like the Black History Showcase and Nigerian Independence Day celebrations are being held to uplift black voices and foster dialogue on inclusivity and achievement.
